RE: Where do RVs fit into a vacation plan???

I usually 'crunch the numbers' before making a decision on a specific trip, but my general rule of thumb is that there must be at least 2 or more days at the destination for each day of travel (in order to make it cost effective). So - if it takes two days to get there and two days back, then I must spend at least 8 days there. So - for a few days in Las Vegas - get a cheap flight and bargain hotel. But if you want to travel to locations without major tourist facilities, then the RV is the only way to go.

RE: Black Streaks - Awesome?

AND...Be SURE to wear rubber or latex gloves when you are working with Awesome - it is highly Alkaline and removes all grease and oils - including those in your hands and fingers!!!
As for the rig - be sure to rinse completely as it will remain on the surface and continue to 'work' if it is not completely removed (with all the other 'stuff' it has penetrated)!

RE: Good Flag Pole and Mount

OK - I'm a little different!! I too want to display my flag at the front of the rig! So... off to Home Depot! I look around and then the light comes on!! 2 lengths of PVC electrical conduit, three sets of male & female couplers, one cap, two eye bolts of appropriate length to reach thru the PVC, two 'clevis' attachments and I'm ready to go!! (I have the PVC Glue at home.) SO...cut each length in 1/2, glue Male & Female couplers & cap as appropriate to get them together - drill holes for the eyebolts & install them, and that's it!! I now have a 4 section flag pole (or 3 if it's windy). Install the beautiful flag, raise, tie the pole to the bumper and the front wiper mount with nylon cord (or sometimes the side mirror and the drivers door step) and it's 'JAKE'!
Total cost - about (as I recall) about $15. Go for it!!!
The thing stows easily since it does come apart into sections - use teflon spray on the joints or it's the devil to unscrew after some time in the wind!!

RE: Is there no end ?

ghost,
I have changed a couple of water pumps on two of my previous cars - no big deal, just patience, various wrenches and muttered words under the breath. Then, I noticed a leak in the MOHO and yes, it was the water pump bearing seal and it was 'on the way out of town'! I crawled under, I opened the doghouse, I poked and pried and then decided there was NO WAY I could do that job on my FORD 460!! It seems the only way was to out the grille, out the radiator & fan, out all the other components in front of the waterpump, out the old waterpump, clean everything, install the new water pump and then put everything back!! Now I don't know about you, but the folks at the FORD shop have done this sort of thing many times and know the 'tricks'. But for me, it would be SEVERAL days of reading the manuals, doing some things wrong at least once and generally making myself miserable before it was over. I opted to let them do it and paid the VERY HIGH hourly rate in exchange for my peace of mind and lack of personal injury!!

Where are the FireFlies??

I remember ('way back when) that in springtime and early summer we often camped in places where the evening fireflies were everywhere and put on a great night time show. In the past couple of years, I can remember only one place where the fireflies were abundant. It's time to go camping and I'd like to know if you have seen them recently!

RE: Is anyone slowing down to get better mileage

Being a mostly 'double nickel' driver, I do not go much slower (or faster) on the Interstate highways. The few times I have needed to and gone faster for a distance, the mileage was MUCH worse!!

RE: RV'ing music

Well, I find there to be all kinds of music I enjoy while in the rig, but the tune that comes closest to expressing my situation is an old C&W truckin' tune titled 'Give me 20 acres and I'll turn this rig around!' :)

RE: Anyone own a Gear Vendor under/overdrive??

amberjax,
It sure does make a BIG difference on my rig! Six speeds forward. Cruise at 2650 RPM in overdrive instead of 3100 RPM in 'normal 3rd of the C6 transmission - and thus MUCH better MPG! Plus better shift point during acceleration from stopped. You do not mention your setup, but for mine, it is GREAT!!

RE: Refinancing your RV - Has anyone done it?

spepi,
I have not - I'm a 'cash' person, but from everything I'm reading in the newspapers, seeing on the TV and following on the Internet, - while there are many actions afoot to lower interest rates and improve the recession economy we are experiencing, lenders have become 'tight' and if you have a good loan, you better keep it as there are not too many options available for new finance. Of course, there are always those who have enticing offers of lower interest - but you need to change with great care. I have a personal friend that thought he was getting an 'equity loan' and reality was it was a loan that simply allowed the lender to collect for awhile and then take his home. Yes, it was his own fault for not being careful in his financial dealings, but it was also a case of 'predatory' loans.

OH *#%$@ - ALL DIGITAL Television

Yep - I just talked with the folks at Winegard and YES, in order to be able to watch TV after February 2009, I need to purchase a new head for the antenna (and get up there and install it myself!) AND purchase a 'digital converter box' to get the signals to the TV's in the rig!! Total cost - $90 for the new head, $180 for the converter box and shipping for both! There will not be much change left from $300!!! I think I'll be listening to the radio for the news and watching movies on the VCR =- when I'm in the rig anyway!!! What are your plans???

RE: Can anyone explain???

par,
The basic reason, as noted before is: because they can! And like any other product, it is subject to the very basic supply and demand computation. There are places where fuel is quite cheap (government control of production) and places where is much more expensive than in the USA. So - what can individuals do about it? - VERY LITTLE!!
Over 20 years ago I read a paper (by someone I cannot remember) that offered the opinion that within 25 to 30 years, petroleum would be too valuable to simply burn up as fuel. The thought was that there are so many other things we want and need that are produced by crude oil (such as lubricating oils) that the world would only have a limited amount of oils to use.
The folks with abundant oil supplies (Arabs) have enjoyed milking the world for as much money as they can get for their available natural resources. Who can blame them! And as a result, they have more money than most of us can even imagine!!
So - to explain - just look at other places in the world where diesel and other fuel (gasoline) is half again or even double what we pay in the USA. BE PREPARED - The cost of Diesel and Gasoline will only increase in the future!! I remember filling the tank of my (old and used) 1948 Ford with 25 cent / gallon gas! And how many remember the late '70's when many gas pumps could not process gas at more than 99 cents per gallon!! GOSH, I'm OLD!!!

RE: Trouble getting RV financing

Just a thought - look for something you can afford without a loan and save some back for future repairs. Our rig would be ideal, as it was a top-o-the-line model, but now it's 'old'. However, it still has all of the things one could want (except a slideout) and it's really a small apartment on wheels.
